When Robert and Carol Gleason started looking for a retirement home, they knew they had to get it right. Their eyes were drawn to an old, abandoned property on Main St. in Farmingdale, NJ.
The property had been owned by a medical doctor and his wife. After the doctor passed away it was neglected and then damaged by a fire. By the time the Gleasons got their hands on it, it was in bad shape.
Since we are seniors… we would never have the ability to do this again.
After giving the house a total makeover, Robert and Carol turned their attention to the outside. Carol’s passion was centered around sculpting with clay and Robert was a restorer and collector of antique cars. Their property lacked a shed and garage that could be used to pursue their hobbies in their new home in Farmingdale.
They began by searching the internet to find local builders of sheds and garages. That’s when they found Sheds Unlimited online. The buildings on the Sheds Unlimited website were attractive and could be customized to meet their needs. Carol was especially impressed with the hundreds of customer reviews on the Sheds Unlimited website. So they decided to visit the Sheds Unlimited location in PA to see the buildings first hand.
The Gleasons found many styles and sizes of sheds and garages to choose from on the Sheds Unlimited sales lot. They found that “the salespeople were very friendly and helpful and even gave us some samples”. After that initial visit, they decided that they didn’t need to look anywhere else. They returned to their home in Farmingdale, NJ with lots of new information and things to process.

The Gleasons checked the local building codes to find out what size buildings would be allowed on their property. One month later they returned to the Sheds Unlimited office after deciding to purchase three buildings. Their requests to have a few antique items incorporated into the building designs were readily accommodated.
The buildings they chose included a one and two-car garage that would be attached to form one building. Local township codes allowed for up to three garage spaces so this arrangement was approved. The one-car garage was built with extra high walls to accommodate the use of a car lift.
The second building was an 8×10 Saltbox that Carol turned into a clay sculpting studio. She had a kiln added to the back for firing her clay projects. The shed came with most of the wiring completed and the floor insulated. Carol then installed a floating floor and hired a contractor to finish the inside.
In the process of deciding what size buildings they need for their hobbies, the Gleasons decided that they also need a tool shed for general storage. So they ordered a 12×20 Workshop from the Premier Garden Shed collection to use for garden tools and general storage.
After placing their order, the next step was to prepare the sites for their new buildings following local building codes. They found a local site preparation contractor who installed the concrete foundation and floor for the 3 car garage and gravel pads for the tool shed and clay studio. Sheds Unlimited provided specifics and drawings that were used by the foundation contractor to make sure there were no surprises on delivery day.
Since the Gleasons had plenty of room on their property, they decided to have the buildings installed on angles. They are very pleased with the final appearance of the sheds and the improvements to the appearance of their property. Positive comments from neighbors and inquiries about where they purchased the buildings help to assure them that they made the right decision.
The most memorable part of the experience was watching the Sheds Unlimited delivery driver unload the two smaller buildings!
The two smaller buildings arrived completely constructed on a long trailer. Even though the roads leading to their property on Main Street were narrow and crowded, the driver was able to bring the buildings safely to their house. The video above is not of the Gleason’s Shed, but it’s the same process.
The fact that the delivery driver was able to maneuver the trailer to our property was truly amazing. Not only was that a feat to behold, but it had rained heavily and the property was total mud. The driver was not disturbed in the least and proceeded to place the buildings on the foundations. His attitude was cheerful the entire time!
After delivery, the buildings were finished on the inside by a third party. The concrete garage floor was sealed and a floating floor was laid in the studio. The buildings are heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer.
Robert and Carol love their new buildings (and the neighbors say they look great). In their own words, “since we are seniors we are delighted with everything and know that we would never have the ability to do this again. Absolutely no regrets!”
