When Life Gives you Trees… Build a Treehouse Shed!

Note: We are no longer able to accommodate project that involve placing buildings on platforms or raising them off the ground (more than a few inches).

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade… so they say… Better yet, when life gives you trees, build a treehouse! You could even enjoy drinking the lemonade up there!

That’s what Lauren from Dover, Massachusetts decided to do to spruce up her backyard and make a lovely place for the kids to enjoy…and a place to drink lemonade 🙂

Inspired by the Treehouse Masters who build luxury treehouses that might cost as much as a home, Lauren and her husband set out to build something that would sit in the trees and be a nice place for an evening of fun… But not cost an arm and a leg!

Even more, the treehouse shed could be set up as a small shed with living space if Lauren ever decided she needed a She Shed or her husband wanted a Man Cave!

Getting the Storage Shed Treehouse Figured Out

Not every storage shed builder in the world has what it takes to build a storage shed in a tree! So Lauren and her husband did a search online for both the style of the building they wanted and a builder who had the equipment to get the storage shed up on top of the platform they planned to build.

That is when they found Sheds Unlimited in Lancaster County, PA. They also found a storage shed design that gave them the look they wanted in a Treehouse for their Massachusetts home.

After perusing the options at Sheds Unlimited, they chose the Premier Garden Shed with a steep roof pitch and plenty of windows included. The steeper Treehouse Shed roof pitch was important as it would give them more space for a loft inside and space for the children to play around in the loft. Added to that was a 5’ shed dormer on the roof to give just a bit more light and even more space for the loft area.

When it comes to putting a shed in the backyard, you might be able to do it with little hassle in terms of township guidelines and permitting issues. But putting a shed on stilts up in the trees adds some extra challenges. The first thing a town will need is a set of plans for the building so they can be sure the building and the platform will hold up.

Sheds Unlimited offers free plans on any building over $10,000 with a $275.00 deposit that then goes towards the purchase of the building.

So Lauren and her husband gave the designer at Sheds Unlimited the layout of the treehouse shed they had envisioned. The shed plans soon came back and were submitted to the town for approval. ​

Getting the Treehouse Shed in Place

Now comes the fun part. After approvals were in and the platform was built, Lauren was excited to get the shed in place up in the trees.

The building process began at the Sheds Unlimited manufacturing facility in Lancaster County, PA. The walls, as far as they could be, the rafters were tacked together and many of the pieces precut for assembly on the treehouse platform.

After doing the pre-building of the treehouse shed, all the parts were loaded onto the truck and trailer along with a lift to help get the heavy walls up onto the platform. Early one morning, the Sheds Unlimited team started on their treehouse building adventure. They drove the several hours to Lauren’s home in Massachusetts.

The Treehouse Shed Takes Shape

The team arrived early in the morning and began unloading the truck. The first steps were to get the floor parts assembled up on the platform that was ready for the treehouse. Within hours the shed on stilts had taken shape and was rising into the trees.

So exciting! A dream was coming true!

When the floor was finished, then came the walls. One section at a time and the treehouse was starting to look like a little house. Then came the rafters, sheathing, and shingles. Finishing touches included painting, lofts, and installing windows and doors!

By the end of the day, the treehouse shed was finished and ready-to-go. Now, all it needed was some basic furniture to make the cozy space Lauren wanted. Here it is with some carpet on the floor and basic furniture for a small backyard getaway.

How Does it Compare to the Treehouse Guys?

While it certainly doesn’t compare with the Treehouse Masters treehouse tours, it did turn out to be a small backyard getaway for the children and one that could be finished out later for a getaway from the busyness of life Lauren was delighted!
